9 Natural Remedies for Scars
Natural remedies can support the healing of minor wounds, helping them recover faster. They may also aid in the recovery of larger stitched wounds and even help minimize the appearance of scars. Here is list of 9 natural remedies which is useful and easily available in your Kitchen or Garden.
Aloe vera for Scars
Aloe vera has many benefits, particularly for the skin. It helps heal damaged skin, reduce inflammation, and maintain moisture.
First, clean the area with warm water. Then, apply aloe vera gel (available in pharmacies and health food stores) directly to the scar. Reapply as often as necessary. It’s also a great aftershave, moisturizing, and healing product.
The gel can be used by everyone, including children, pregnant women, and breastfeeding women.
A Mixture of Rose water and Sandalwood essential oil
Rose water is a natural skin stimulant, while sandalwood has tissue regenerative and antiseptic properties. This Solution should only be used on a fresh but healed wound, not on open wounds.
Make a thick paste with rose water (also called rose hydrosol, sold in health food stores and pharmacies), sandalwood essential oil (15 drops per bowl), and superfine green clay (available in health food stores or pharmacies). After cleaning the scar with water, apply the paste along the entire length and wrap it in a cloth so that it stays in place overnight. Reapply 2 to 3 times a week until you have a beautiful scar. Wash with lukewarm water upon waking.
Sandalwood essential oil can be used for children as young as 3 months and pregnant women after the first trimester of pregnancy. This poultice can also be used by pregnant women to combat the appearance of stretch marks.
Lemon juice
Lemon juice contains vitamin C and antioxidants. It is very effective in treating various types of scars (closed wounds), including hypertrophic scars. It is therefore ideal for refining an existing scar.
Place a little fresh lemon juice on the affected area. Leave on for 30 minutes, then wash off. Do this 2 to 3 times a day for 15 to 20 days.
Remember to avoid exposing the treated skin to the sun, as it may leave marks. As a general rule, avoid exposing your scars to the sun for at least a year and apply a full-screen sunscreen. Lemon can dry out the skin, so remember to moisturize after application.
A dash of apple cider vinegar
Apple cider vinegar minimizes scar redness and size. This remedy is best used on closed scars. By softening the tissues during the healing process, apple cider vinegar allows your skin to quickly re-form. It’s therefore a very good remedy for people prone to keloid scars, i.e., hypertrophied scars.
Apply the vinegar directly to the fresh but closed scar and massage gently so that the liquid is absorbed by the skin. Let it dry, then repeat the process a second time. Do this at least once a day for two consecutive weeks to see an effect. Vinegar can dry out the skin, so remember to moisturize after application.
Baking soda
Baking soda is a very good, gentle abrasive and exfoliating agent. It can gradually smooth and refine the scar. Mix baking soda with a little water to form a paste. If you dilute it too much, the baking soda won’t work. Apply the paste directly to the skin only on closed wounds to speed the healing process and reduce inflammation. Repeat two to three times a week for visible results. Apply for two to three months.
The juice of a garlic clove
Garlic acts as an anti-inflammatory and appears to block the overproduction of collagen in scars. It has a beneficial effect on keloid scars.
Squeeze out the juice from a garlic clove, then apply it to your healing scar using a cotton ball several times a day. Reapply daily for 1 to 3 weeks. This juice can dry out the skin, so remember to moisturize after application.
Application of Honey on Scars
Honey is a natural moisturizer that restores and softens the skin.
Apply fresh honey to a healing wound, as well as to a small open wound or a larger one that has just been sutured. Massage gently to allow it to penetrate, prevent the buildup of dead cells, and improve blood circulation. You can use thyme honey for its disinfectant properties. Its flavonoids also have highly valued anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Thyme honey has been used successfully on very large wounds in hospitals to accelerate healing.
Continue this application for several days until the wound is completely closed.
Caution: The sugar in honey can promote bacterial colonization of the wound. Before using it on an open wound, consult your doctor.
A Cocoa Butter massage
Cocoa butter helps accelerate and stimulate collagen production, which reduces the appearance of your scar.
Massage the cocoa butter (available from a health food store) directly onto your healed scar. Don’t hesitate to massage firmly (as long as it doesn’t become painful) in circular motions to stimulate circulation and allow it to penetrate deeply. Continue this massage until the cocoa butter is completely absorbed by the skin. You can repeat this twice a day. Repeat for 2 to 3 weeks.
Lavender oil for Scars
Lavender essential oil has regenerative properties for skin cells. On open wounds and healed scars, apply pure lavender oil (if you want to stop the bleeding) or diluted (5 to 10 drops mixed with a teaspoon of hazelnut, sesame, or sweet almond oil, etc.). Then gently massage the affected area for several minutes. Continue for 2 to 3 days until the scar heals.
Lavender essential oil can be used by pregnant women over 3 months and children over 6 months.
